“Mrs Elsie Wisdom”
Original painting in oils – 300 x 400 mm (12 x 16 inches)
The lady racing driver better known as “Bill”. Born in 1904, she enjoyed driving fast from an early age. In 1930 she married motoring journalist and gentleman racer Tommy Wisdom, but very much followed her own motor racing career. Her greatest triumph was the Brooklands 1,000-Mile Race of 1932 along with Australian driver Joan Richmond in a Riley, and she also competed at the 1936 Ards TT, at Le Mans and drove in many rallies, including the Mille Miglia, the Monte Carlo and the Coupe des Alps.
Painted in oils over a tonal under-painting – my favourite approach to portrait painting!
