Original Sedan Chair at the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum

Sedan Chair

The original Sedan Chair of the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum, which dates from the late 1780s. It was built in London by Holmes & Griffin, chair-maker to the king.
In the 17th and 18th centuries sedan chairs provided a 'taxi service' in most Irish and British cities.
The sedan chair carried by two strong men allowed people to negotiate muddy streets without getting their clothes and shoes dirty.
